Birding Nature Tours

Although Vieques is a small island, only 24 miles by 6 miles wide, it has numerous bird species due to large areas of natural habitat. A number of birds endemic to Puerto Rico are often found in Vieques, including the Puerto Rican Woodpecker, and the Puerto Rican Flycatcher.

Vieques is fortunate to have had excellent birders visit Vieques and record sightings. For the last twenty-five years, Daphne Gemmill has gathered information for the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust on Vieques birds during her visits to the island.  She has developed an excellent checklist (available in the VCHT Gift shop). Occasionally this busy birder has kindly consented to lead tours to various sites on the island.  These have become very popular and now Richard and Peggy Puffer, two very experienced birders, have stepped in to provide three tours each year, on the last Friday of December, the last Friday of January and another the last Friday of February.

Please view our Events Calendar for Tour Schedules.
