A core part of the Trust’s mission is education. During the 2020-2021 school year, when there were no in-person classes in Vieques, the Trust successfully launched a new educational initiative, The Wizards of Nature. Thirty-two Viequense youth received training and certifications to work in the nature tourism industry, while in a safe and adaptable environment. This program was funded primarily by a grant from the Puerto Rico Community Foundation and the Red Nose Fund.
Because of the success of The Wizards of Nature program, these same sponsors will be helping to fund the Trust’s new program: The Wizards of the Bay.
Fifteen 16-25 year-olds will begin a six month course that provides them with the training and certifications needed to become night-time tour guides of the Bio Bay.
As part of our commitment to education and conservation, The Vieques Conservation & Historical Trust, co-managers of the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Natural Reserve, is grateful to be able to partner with entities like the Puerto Rico Community Foundation and the Red Nose Fund. Partnerships like these, and members like you, are what allows us to develop and implement educational programs specifically designed for our island community.
